If you want a foot in the door at Google, here is your chance.

For the third year running, Google is kicking off its Summer of Code program, offering to pay students to write software for free open-source projects.

Budding coders from all over the world are being invited to apply; last year's program brought 630 students from 90 countries together with 102 open-source mentoring groups, Google said.

Red Hat To Produce Open Source Tools With Ajax Partner

One project will more closely integrate Java, with its many platform APIs and complications, with the simpler world of scripting languages and browser interactions with end users. 

Red Hat has teamed up with a pioneer Ajax tools supplier, Exadel, to offer open source tools for building applications aimed at its JBoss middleware. In doing so, Red Hat will add JBoss tools to the growing pantheon of those available as open source Eclipse platform plug-ins.

Too late to discredit open source, advocates say

Advocates and users of free and open source software (FOSS) technology believe that it is too late for any form of crusade to discredit FOSS as it is already widely used.

The sources made the statement following reports that some private software firms are now using marketing funds to mislead enterprises towards adopting the open source strategy.

"It's too late," exclaimed Winston Damarillo, founder and chairman of software development firm Exist Global. "Open source is all over the place."

What happens when a free and open source software (FOSS) project attempts to introduce compensation for its developers? Because FOSS remains based largely on volunteer work, many worry that payment might demotivate both those who receive it and those who do not. However, community leaders who have observed how payment interacts with the FOSS ethos suggest a more complicated picture. Identifying four main types of payment -- bounties, payment in kind, grants, and employment -- these experts suggest that what happens depends on the type of payment, as well as on the individuals involved.
